This Christmas Crochet Kitchen Set started with a simple evergreen dishcloth and grew into four coordinating pieces: two textured dishcloths, a dishtowel, and a peppermint spiral trivet. Each uses a different stitch or technique, so I got to play with several textures without making four versions of the same thing.

The finished set would make a lovely handmade Christmas gift, especially tucked into a reusable basket with a few kitchen goodies. I’ve shared more ideas for putting those together in my Cozy Kitchen Gift Basket Ideas post.
You can also make the pieces individually. A dishcloth paired with a favorite soap or a handmade mug cozy makes a smaller gift when you don’t need an entire basket.

Materials
I used a 4 mm (G/6) crochet hook and five skeins of cotton yarn for the entire collection.
Yarn:
- 1 skein Hello Hobby cotton yarn in Red
- 1 skein Hello Hobby cotton yarn in Green
- 1 skein Hello Hobby cotton yarn in Ecru
- 2 skeins Peaches & Creme cotton yarn in Yuletide
I had plenty of yarn left over, so you won’t use all five skeins making this set. These are the quantities I had on hand, not exact yardage requirements.
Other supplies:
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Stitch markers
I use stitch markers quite a bit, particularly when I’m working in rounds or switching between colors. If you need to stock up on hooks, markers, yarn needles, or other basics, you can find some of my favorites in my Amazon crochet supplies list.

A Few Tips Before You Start
Use stitch markers at the beginning of rows and rounds. They’re especially useful when the stitch pattern makes it difficult to tell where a row begins or ends.
Count your rows as you go. All three rectangular projects include the first row worked into the foundation chain in their total row counts.
Check your measurements. Cotton yarn can vary in thickness, even between brands. Use the finished measurements as your guide rather than assuming every crocheter will get exactly the same size.
Keep your borders relaxed. The first single crochet round establishes the shape of each piece. Work evenly along the sides and avoid pulling the stitches too tight.

- sl st โ slip stitch
- st(s) โ stitch(es)
- rnd โ round

Pattern Notes
- Color A = Ivory; Color B = Red.
- Work in a continuous two-color spiral without joining or turning.
- When changing colors, pull up an extra-long loop before dropping the working yarn to prevent unraveling.
- Place a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.
- When picking up a dropped color, pass its working loop through the stitch marker before placing the loop back on your hook. This helps keep your marker in the correct position.
- At color changes, you may need to move the dropped loop aside to locate the final stitch.
- The spiral technique is adapted from Raji’s Craft Hobby.
Spiral Circle (Make 2)
Rnd 1: With A, make a magic ring. Ch 1, work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 4 dc) into ring. Pull up a long loop and drop A.
Join B into the same ring. Ch 1, work (1 sc, 1 hdc, 4 dc) into ring. Pull up a long loop and drop B. Tighten magic ring. (12 sts total; 6 per color)
Rnd 2: Without turning, place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round. Pick up A, work 2 dc in each of the 6 B sts. Pull up a long loop and drop A.
Pick up B, work 2 dc in each of the 6 A sts, stopping at the stitch marker. Pull up a long loop and drop B. (24 sts total; 12 per color)

Taper and Finish
Finish Red first, followed by Ivory.
Red: Pick up B. Dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, sl st in each of next 2 sts. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Ivory: Pick up A. Dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, sl st in each of next 2 sts. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Repeat the entire pattern to make a second identical circle.
Green Joining Border
Place both circles together with wrong sides facing and the spiral designs facing outward.
Rnd 1: Join Green through both layers. Sc evenly around the circumference, inserting hook through corresponding stitches of both circles to join them together. Join with sl st to first sc.
Fasten off and weave in all remaining ends.
Finishing
Lay the trivet flat and gently shape it into a circle. The finished diameter should be approximately 8ยผ inches, including the green border.
My Tips for Working the Two-Color Spiral
Use stitch markers. Place a marker at the beginning of your rounds so you know where to stop each color.
Thread the loop through the marker. When picking up a dropped color, I thread the working loop through my stitch marker before putting it back on my hook. That puts the marker in the right place when I make my first stitch.
Pull up an extra-long loop before dropping a color. Otherwise, it’s surprisingly easy to pull out stitches while working with the other yarn. A long loop saves having to redo them.
Watch that last stitch. When you get to the other color’s dropped loop, hold the loop aside if necessary so you can find the stitch underneath.
Don’t turn your work. Keep the same side facing you throughout the spiral.
I originally considered adding a three-color decorative border, but the simple green single crochet looked so good against the peppermint spiral that I left it alone.
Finished diameter: 8ยผ inches.
A note about heat: Use 100% cotton yarn for kitchen projects. Even with two layers, crocheted fabric can transfer heat, especially when damp. Test the trivet carefully before using it with hot cookware, and don’t assume it will provide the protection of a heat-rated potholder.

Finishing and Caring for Your Crochet Kitchen Set
Once all four pieces are complete, weave in any remaining yarn ends.
If the dishcloths or dishtowel need a little shaping, dampen them lightly and lay them flat to dry. Don’t stretch the borders out of shape.
Cotton kitchen accessories can generally be washed and reused, but follow the care instructions on your yarn labels, especially when washing red and ivory together for the first time.
Turn It Into a Handmade Christmas Gift
This set is useful on its own, but it would also be easy to turn into a Christmas kitchen gift basket.
I like the idea of placing the folded dishcloths and dishtowel into a reusable mixing bowl, adding the peppermint trivet on top, and tucking in a wooden spoon or a few favorite kitchen treats.
You could also add a mug with my Holly Berry Mug Cozy crochet pattern for an extra handmade touch.
If you need ideas for filling out the basket without spending a fortune, take a look at my Cozy Kitchen Gift Basket Ideas post. It includes several combinations for different budgets.
And if you’re crocheting for more than one person this Christmas, I’ve collected additional projects in Easy Crochet Christmas Gifts You Can Actually Finish.
The nice thing about this collection is that you can give all four pieces together or split them into smaller gifts. A dishcloth and a mug cozy, a dishtowel and a wooden spoon, or the peppermint trivet with a jar of homemade treats would all make practical little presents.
Happy crocheting!
